French keyword research

Translated English keywords miss most of the French demand. I research what French buyers really type on Google.fr, with volumes, intent, seasonality and competition, so your French pages target the searches that bring customers. Briefed in English, delivered in a clear Excel file.

  • 6,488German keywords analysed for ENGMAR
  • 4,600+keywords across DACH, France and English-speaking markets for Micrel
  • 3,296queries studied for Walbeez
  • 1,975Dutch keywords in 13 categories for Protilab

The context

Why research each country? – International keyword research

Translating keywords is the most common mistake in international SEO. A French buyer doesn't search with the translation of your words; they have their own, with their own volumes and regional variants. A Belgian and a French user don't always use the same terms, and neither do an Austrian and a German.

My research starts from scratch, in the country's own language, market by market. It then becomes the blueprint for your site: which pages, which keywords, which content, in which order.

You need it if…

  • You're entering a new market and don't know which terms matter.
  • Your translated pages don't rank for any query.
  • You're torn between several terms to name your offer.
  • You want a content plan based on data rather than hunches.

FAQ

Your questions – International keyword research

What is keyword research?
The analysis of every query your customers type into Google around your business, with volumes, intent and seasonality. It's the foundation for your site structure and content.
Why not simply translate my existing keywords?
Because each country has its own vocabulary. Translated keywords often target terms nobody searches for and miss the real queries.
How many keywords does the research cover?
From a few hundred to several thousand: 1,975 for Protilab in the Netherlands, 3,296 for Walbeez in France, 6,488 for ENGMAR in the German-speaking market.
Can you cover several countries with the same language?
Yes. Germany, Austria and Switzerland, or France, Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland, get separate tabs when searches differ.
How do you find keyword search volume by country?
I set the country and the language separately in Google Keyword Planner and in professional SEO tools: French searches from France, Belgium and Switzerland are three different markets. You get monthly volumes, seasonality and search intent for each country, in an Excel file.
What is keyword research by country?
It is keyword research run separately for each target market. Each country searches with its own words, even in the same language, so I collect the terms people really type in each country instead of translating a single list.
Do you cover French-speaking markets beyond France?
Yes: Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, country by country, because vocabulary and search volumes differ from one market to another.
Can you start from our English keyword list?
Yes, as a starting point. I then look for the French terms people actually use, which are often different words, and add the French queries your English list cannot reveal.
